John Frank Davidson (born 7 February 1926[1]) is a British chemical engineer and former Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge.

He attended Heaton Grammar School in Heaton, Newcastle. He gained a MA from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1950, a PhD in 1953 (both in engineering) and a ScD in Chemical Engineering in 1963.[2]
He was appointed as a technical demonstrator in the Department of Chemical Engineering in 1952 and was elected a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge in 1957.[3] He was appointed Professor of Chemical Engineering and head of department in 1975 and Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1978 until retiring as an active lecturer in 1993. He did research work on fluidised bed gasification and clean coal combustion.
He married Susanne Hedwig Ostberg in 1948. They have a son and a daughter.
He was awarded a Royal Medal in 1999 for his chemical engineering work, and has been a Fellow of the Royal Society since 1974.[2] He was President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) from 1970-1.
